I remember a friend in college who would blush, sweat, and tremble when required by a teacher to speak in class. A few weeks before the presentation, he'd be anxious, agitated, and couldn't sleep. Because I was still a student then, I didn't have any clue what he was going through. But I knew that something was terribly wrong.

A few years ago while in the airport, I noticed a man who'd wait for everyone to leave the washroom before he'd use the urinal. He wasn't comfortable that someone would see him urinate.

In retrospect, I can say (now that I'm a psychiatrist) that those two individuals might have suffered from Social Phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). I just hope that they are doing well now but the symptoms that they manifested at the time were consistent with this devastating illness.

How bad is Social Phobia or SAD?

Social Phobia or SAD is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by extreme fear, anxiety, or distress when exposed to a social gathering or when doing something before a group of people.

Public speaking is the most common situation that exposes the individual's social fears. An individual suffering from this disorder develops significant anxiety symptoms such as sweating, fast heart beat, tremulousness, and restlessness when making a presentation or giving a minor talk. Even small corporate or committee meetings can cause grave distress.

Urinating in public washrooms, eating in fast food restaurants, writing in front of people or signing documents in a bank can also trigger feelings of fear and discomfort. Individuals with this illness are preoccupied with being embarrassed or criticized by others. Some patients feel that people are so focused on them and are only waiting for blunders to happen.

So Social Phobia can be devastating to a lot of patients and their families. Because of their difficulties in a social milieu, some of them have eventually lost their jobs, friends, and spouses. It is an illness that has wrought havoc to many. It is therefore vital that Social Phobia should be recognized and treated without delay.

Is there any treatment for this illness?

Fortunately, some newer antidepressants such as paroxetine and venlafaxine are known to work and have caused significant relief to a lot of individuals. However, these medications don't work right away. They need to be taken daily for a few weeks to see any benefit. Moreover, the medications' maximum effect may occur within 6-8 weeks or longer. To maintain stability after feeling "normal," patients may have to take the medication for several months to a few years.

In addition to medications, cognitive-behavioral intervention also works well. By restructuring the person's cognition, patients eventually learn to face social situations without fear and uncertainty.

SCORM and the Learning Management System (LMS)

What actually is SCORM? SCORM, Shareable Content Object Reference Model, is a standard for web-based e-learning that has been developed to define communication between client-side content and a runtime environment. In the context of this article, the client-side content would be the course launched by a student and the runtime environment would be a Learning Management System. The SCORM standard has undergone several version releases from SCORM v1.0 in 1999 to the SCORM 2004 3rd Edition in 2006. The purpose of this article is to look in a little more detail at the communication flow between the LMS and a course that is SCORM v2.1 compliant. The intention is not to review every possible communication but just the main calls. We will look at SCORM in the context of a SCORM course, i.e. a course that has been developed and built to communicate with a Learning Management System using the SCORM standard.

First of all, let me define a few terms that I will use and that you may hear in reference to SCORM courses:

• API (Application Programming Interface)

The SCORM standard has a defined API. The term API is not unique to SCORM but is a well known term in application development. The SCORM API is a documented set of messages that are sent between the course and the LMS. The message may require a response so that the sender of the message is guaranteed that the message has been received and processed appropriately.

• Manifest

The manifest is the master file for the SCORM course that contains references to all other files that make up the complete content of the course.

• Single SCO

A single SCO is the most basic and most common form of a SCORM course. All files that make up the course, regardless of the number of lessons in the course, are packaged as one SCO unit. When the course is launched within the Learning Management System, it communicates with the SCO.

• Multiple SCO

A multiple SCO is where a group of files within the course can be treated as an individual SCO but packaged together with other SCOs to comprise one course. For example, the files that comprise each lesson of a SCORM course can be grouped together so that each lesson is a SCO in its own right and all the SCOs will comprise the one course.

Course Installation

For the course to be available in the Learning Management System, the SCORM package needs to be installed on the system. The method of installation will vary from LMS to LMS but will typically go through the following steps:

1. The manifest file will be located and interpreted.

2. The course identified in the manifest will be created in the Learning Management System and the course properties will be populated with the values defined in the manifest. These properties may include course name, creator, etc.

3. The lessons of the course will be created in the LMS and the lesson properties will be populated with the values defined in the manifest. Lesson properties would include information such as the path to the lesson file, passing grade, etc.

The Learning Management System should provide a facility to overwrite an already existing SCORM course so that if updates are made to the existing course, an installation will deploy those changes.

Course Communication

Initialization

When the course is launched within its run time environment, which for our purposes is the LMS, it will detect the existence of the API and attempt to make initial communication with the Learning Management System. This is a one-time handshake to ensure that communication has been established. The SCORM course is responsible for locating the API in the child browser session that it has launched in from the parent. The API is typically deployed using JavaScript. The API call that the course uses to do this is the LMSInitialize call. When the Learning Management System receives this API message call from the course, the LMS will initialize and respond to inform the course that communication has been established. An object model has been created in memory and the properties have been initialized to default values.

Intermediary Course Communication

Once the course has been launched and initialized with the LMS, the interaction between the two is determined by the course. It will use LMSGetValue and LMSSetValue API message calls to retrieve or populate data in the object model. Bear in mind that the object model exists in memory and has not been sent to the Learning Management System.

When the course needs to write the data so it exists in the database, it will send the API message LMSCommit. The LMSCommit will be received by the Learning Management System and the data stored to the LMS. The course developer will determine when an LMSCommit is required and it will be sent to the LMS when the event is activated. This could be at the end of each lesson or it could be at the end of the course.

The LMSCommit is an optional message and does not require a response from the Learning Management System.

Finalization

When the course is completed, it will send an LMSFinish API message to the LMS. This may be triggered by an event in the course that activates the LMSFinish or it may be on the Unload event of the HTML page when the user closes the browser. The LMSFinish indicates to the LMS that the user has ended the course and any further communication between the two will be rejected. The LMSFinish also initiates the Learning Management System to store any data that has been populated in the object model and complete the unloading of the course.

The key difference between the LMSCommit and LMSFinish API message calls is that the latter will prevent further communication with the course.

The LMSFinish is a mandatory message and does not require a response from the LMS.

Learning Management System Considerations

When the LMSFinish is received by the LMS, there are several scenarios that may need to be taken into account. Some of these may be the product of errors in course development but are scenarios that have been experienced in interfacing with a SCORM compliant course:

1. The SCORM course may indicate the student has failed a lesson but the score passed from the SCO may be greater than the lesson passing grade that was installed from the manifest.

2. The SCORM course may indicate a lesson status for the user and pass the score of the lesson but there has been no passing grade defined for the lesson.

3. It would be advantageous for the Learning Management System to provide API message logging so that a communication history may be recreated for debugging or historical purposes. Consideration should be given to the following:

a. Method of storage, whether it is stored in a database or out to a file.

b. Is logging on all the time or is there a switch to turn logging on or off? (There will be some overhead when logging is switched on, as opposed to being off.)

c. If logging is to file, is there a log file for each course, each user, or one large SCORM log file?

d. How is log data purged? When logging is stored in the database, how often is the table purged? Can the data be deleted or does it need to be archived? If logging is to a file, does the file build in size until it is manually renewed or does the logging mechanism have a trigger that automatically generates a new file? (If the file is left to grow too big, it becomes very impractical to open it in a text editor.)

Conclusions

SCORM has a proven track record in the web based e-learning world and is the accepted standard in the industry. Reputable LMS vendors should support your SCORM course out of the box. The SCORM 2004 version has added much more control and sequencing at a more granular level than SCORM v1.2 however those differences are significant enough to cause the user base to be slower in adopting the SCORM 2004 version.

Pretty, vivacious and ambitious, young Katherine Howard was, unfortunately, not very bright and this was to lead to her downfall.

The Catholic Duke, who was extremely ambitious, was anxious to get rid of the Lutheran Anne of Cleves, King Henry's present wife, and his Protestant enemy, Thomas Cromwell. He knew that Henry had an eye for pretty young girls and obtained a position for Katherine as lady-in-waiting to Anne of Cleves. Katherine, of course, wanted to be Queen and accepted the King's attentions with alacrity, even though he was 50, unattractive and very fat, with a nasty abscess on his leg. Although he could be charming, his leg was very painful and he was quite often very bad-tempered.

Henry was enamoured with Katherine, and showered her with gifts and substantial grants of land. He quickly decided to annul his marriage with Anne, who, probably terrified, made no fuss whatsoever. One of the wisest of the wives she was well-rewarded for her graciousness.

Katherine was advised by her family to remain chaste until her marriage. However, the indiscretions of her past would catch up with her and Henry would be sadly disillusioned to find that his wife was no pure young girl.

Katherine married Henry in secret at the magnificent palace of Oaklands so that he could be alone with her for ten days. She enjoyed her luxurious life as Queen. Henry indulged her by buying her new gowns every day and lavishing jewellery upon her. However, there was soon gossip about the King's young wife. She appeared to be greedy and frivolous and Henry was disappointed when she failed to conceive.

Francis Dereham, her past lover, was employed by Katherine as her private secretary, and soon nasty rumours spread about Katherine's past. Joan Bulmer, who used to be Katherine's secretary, and was ambitious for a place at court, begged her to be allowed to 'share in her great destiny'. As Katherine knew that Joan was aware of her former affair she could hardly refuse. Mary Lascelles, a Protestant, told her brother John, about what she regarded as Katherine's loose morals. One girl in the dormitory at Lambeth Palace where Katherine was raised had refused to sleep nearby because of her affair with Francis Dereham. Thomas Cranmer, Henry's friend and Archbishop of Canterbury, was made aware of these rumours.

Katherine had also re-ignited her affair with Thomas Culpepper. It was understandable that she preferred the attentions of handsome young men to the bad-tempered, unattractive and much older King, but she was also very reckless, believing that he would not find out.

Henry's pride was trampled on, and his heart was broken when he learned of the rumours. Katherine confessed to going to bed with Francis Dereham and there was evidence that she had committed adultery. If she had confessed to a pre-contract with Dereham it may have saved her life because a physical relationship with him would then have been understandable. Also she would not then have been regarded as being married to the King. However, Katherine didn't realise this and was given no advice

Katherine died with great pride and dignity, praying for the King's preservation and God's forgiveness, before she was executed. Her lovers were severely punished, dying horrible deaths. One of the most tragic of Henry's wives, she paid much too great a price for being young, pretty and flirtatious.

The default editor that comes with the UNIX operating system is called vi (visual editor). [Alternate editors for UNIX environments include pico and emacs, a product of GNU.]

The UNIX vi editor is a full screen editor and has two modes of operation:

1. Command mode commands which cause action to be taken on the file, and
2. Insert mode in which entered text is inserted into the file.

In the command mode, every character typed is a command that does something to the text file being edited; a character typed in the command mode may even cause the vi editor to enter the insert mode. In the insert mode, every character typed is added to the text in the file; pressing the (Escape) key turns off the Insert mode.

While there are a number of vi commands, just a handful of these is usually sufficient for beginning vi users. To assist such users, this Web page contains a sampling of basic vi commands. The most basic and useful commands are marked with an asterisk (* or star) in the tables below. With practice, these commands should become automatic.

NOTE: Both UNIX and vi are case-sensitive. Be sure not to use a capital letter in place of a lowercase letter; the results will not be what you expect.

To Get Into and Out Of vi

To Start vi

To use vi on a file, type in vi filename. If the file named filename exists, then the first page (or screen) of the file will be displayed; if the file does not exist, then an empty file and screen are created into which you may enter text.

To Exit vi

Usually the new or modified file is saved when you leave vi. However, it is also possible to quit vi without saving the file.

Moving the Cursor

Unlike many of the PC and MacIntosh editors, the mouse does not move the cursor within the vi editor screen (or window). You must use the the key commands listed below. On some UNIX platforms, the arrow keys may be used as well; however, since vi was designed with the Qwerty keyboard (containing no arrow keys) in mind, the arrow keys sometimes produce strange effects in vi and should be avoided.

If you go back and forth between a PC environment and a UNIX environment, you may find that this dissimilarity in methods for cursor movement is the most frustrating difference between the two.

In the table below, the symbol ^ before a letter means that the key should be held down while the letter key is pressed.

Screen Manipulation

The following commands allow the vi editor screen (or window) to move up or down several lines and to be refreshed.

^f move forward one screen
^b move backward one screen
^d move down (forward) one half screen
^u move up (back) one half screen
^l redraws the screen
^r redraws the screen, removing deleted lines

Adding, Changing, and Deleting Text

Unlike PC editors, you cannot replace or delete text by highlighting it with the mouse. Instead use the commands in the following tables.

Perhaps the most important command is the one that allows you to back up and undo your last action. Unfortunately, this command acts like a toggle, undoing and redoing your most recent action. You cannot go back more than one step.

*	u	UNDO WHATEVER YOU JUST DID; a simple toggle

The main purpose of an editor is to create, add, or modify text for a file.

Inserting or Adding Text

The following commands allow you to insert and add text. Each of these commands puts the vi editor into insert mode; thus, the key must be pressed to terminate the entry of text and to put the vi editor back into command mode.

*	i	insert text before cursor, until hit
	I	insert text at beginning of current line, until hit
*	a	append text after cursor, until hit
	A	append text to end of current line, until hit
*	o	open and put text in a new line below current line, until hit
*	O	open and put text in a new line above current line, until hit

Changing Text

The following commands allow you to modify text.

*	r	replace single character under cursor (no needed)
	R	replace characters, starting with current cursor position, until hit
	cw	change the current word with new text, starting with the character under cursor, until hit
	cNw	change N words beginning with character under cursor, until hit; e.g., c5w changes 5 words
	C	change (replace) the characters in the current line, until hit
	cc	change (replace) the entire current line, stopping when is hit
	Ncc or cNc	change (replace) the next N lines, starting with the current line, stopping when is hit

Deleting Text

The following commands allow you to delete text.

*	x	delete single character under cursor
	Nx	delete N characters, starting with character under cursor
	dw	delete the single word beginning with character under cursor
	dNw	delete N words beginning with character under cursor; e.g., d5w deletes 5 words
	D	delete the remainder of the line, starting with current cursor position
*	dd	delete entire current line
	Ndd or dNd	delete N lines, beginning with the current line; e.g., 5dd deletes 5 lines

Cutting and Pasting Text

The following commands allow you to copy and paste text.

	yy	copy (yank, cut) the current line into the buffer
	Nyy or yNy	copy (yank, cut) the next N lines, including the current line, into the buffer
	p	put (paste) the line(s) in the buffer into the text after the current line

Searching Text

A common occurrence in text editing is to replace one word or phase by another. To locate instances of particular sets of characters (or strings), use the following commands.

	/string	search forward for occurrence of string in text
	?string	search backward for occurrence of string in text
	n	move to next occurrence of search string
	N	move to next occurrence of search string in opposite direction

Determining Line Numbers

Being able to determine the line number of the current line or the total number of lines in the file being edited is sometimes useful.

	:.=	returns line number of current line at bottom of screen
	:=	returns the total number of lines at bottom of screen
	^g	provides the current line number, along with the total number of lines, in the file at the bottom of the screen

Saving and Reading Files

These commands permit you to input and output files other than the named file with which you are currently working.

	:r filename	read file named filename and insert after current line (the line with cursor)
	:w	write current contents to file named in original vi call
	:w newfile	write current contents to a new file named newfile
	:12,35w smallfile	write the contents of the lines numbered 12 through 35 to a new file named smallfile

Crime & Punishment

Perfect justice must begin with absolute proof of guilt. Such is often not the case as evidenced by the numerous prisoners exonerated by DNA testing. Punishment meted out unfairly is one of the cruelest forms of torture. The desire to give innocence every chance to emerge is perhaps in large measure the reason our criminal justice system often bogs down with technicalities and loopholes. If a person is guilty of violent crime what do we do then? The first step in a rational approach is to decide whether we want violent criminals to be free to roam our streets. We could be “kind and understanding” and let them go after a little counseling. But the evidence does not demonstrate that works. To be safe we'd all have to arm ourselves as increasing numbers of violent criminals roamed the streets. If we are to protect ourselves from such criminals, there are two logical choices: 1. We lock them away in a box six feet under ground after executing them. The most just way to do the killing is exactly the way they did it to their victim. That is a permanent solution, sure and just but it makes me uneasy since there is almost always the question of true guilt. 2. We lock them away in some type of secure institution. Since I am trying to come up with a logical solution, that institution would not be our present prison system. The second option leaves room for the possibility of exoneration with new exculpatory evidence. But if not prison, what? Criminals should be put on secure restitution work farms instead. There they will toil producing useful labor or goods for society commensurate with the damage they have done. The victim's medical bills, lost work and incapacities must be paid for by the offender. Moreover, all the costs to society for investigations, trials and room and board while incarcerated must be paid. (A great motivation for those guilty to admit it and reduce the legal costs.) The time it takes for economic restitution would by and large dictate the length of the term. For example, if you attack another, incapacitating them, then you get to spend whatever time is necessary earning the money to take care of them. Those who take another's life must substitute their own life with a lifetime of productive work to repay society and the victim's family. Isn't this an obvious solution? Mere imprisonment with society picking up the tab for the police and legal work and the maintenance of the criminal is nuts. Why should the victim and society pay for the evils of the wrongdoer? How do you force someone in prison to work off his or her debt? Give them a choice. Either do it or go without food and shelter. That is the law that works throughout nature so why not apply it to humans? How do you maintain discipline on the farm? Well, a hard day's work will leave little energy for much more than rest. As it is now, prisoners sitting in cells all day have nothing other to do with their energy than scheme more wrongdoing. With my idea those who are a problem get penalized with an extension of their stay and longer work shifts. This is a fair and just way to deter crime and offset the damage created by it. It does not have the potential of unjustly taking the life of another since time would be provided for proof of innocence. And I'm not talking chain gang here, but rather passable work and living conditions with the product of labor going where it should, to the victims and society. U.S. companies are always looking for a cheaper labor force. Well here it is, right on our own shores numbering in the tens of thousands. There is nothing better to sober someone up and drain them of the energy to think up nefarious deeds than a hard day's work. For minor offenders who have a stint in these restitution farms and are then released, they will know what work is, actually improve their resume, spread the word on the street that crime means hard work and be motivated not to return. If they repeat offend, then society will not be the one to suffer. Criminals should be self-maintaining, even a profit center rather than an economic sinkhole. Our present penal system does not work. It is a huge and unjust cost to society. To many it neither serves as punishment nor deterrent. About three quarters of all U.S. prison space has been built in the last decade. Just in California the chances that a person either lives or works in a prison is 1 in 200. It's a crazy state of affairs. I wish I could be warden of the world tomorrow and fix it all.

But unlike these people, I have managed to weed my way through some of the nonsense that is on there, and have discovered it has an amazing potential to do a lot of environmental good. And I am glad I persevered and figured it out.

Yes, there are a lot of posts on Twitter that make you roll your eyes and – I myself do not really care much for reading posts about the fact that someone just had an emergency call of nature… or how to explode my Twitter following with some fancy new viral marketing program…etc

But if you know what interests you, and take the time to learn how Twitter works, you will be surprised to see what an amazing tool it can be in terms environmental justice. It is like a microcosm of the issues across the internet ranging from animal rights, eco-friendly lifestyles, renewable energy, wildlife trafficking, climate change and global warming, industrial pollution, and more … Type in a topic that interests you in the Twitter search field and you’ll be surprised at how many tweets you’ll find about that topic.

3. You learn how other people have accomplished their goals and realize that anyone can accomplish their goals and that change for the better is possible. It gives you hope to never give up on something that you believe in.

4. You can easily connect with other people to work on projects/goals while minimizing your carbon footprint in terms of travelling for example. Besides, once you’re hooked, you may be less apt to hop in your car and drive around town!

5. If enough people start talking about an issue, the more likely it is to show up as a Trending Topic on Twitter, which then in turns reaches more people. It becomes viral! And since we are not talking about swine flu, viral is good.

6. It’s fun! It is not always all serious, and depressing news … people are not always bashing and lashing out … Sometimes we just like to have a bit of fun and throw an odd joke around or tell a funny story. It helps prevent the burnout that can happen sometimes when you feel like you are fighting an uphill battle in terms of environmentalism and conservationism.

7. It puts the power in the hands of the people to make changes because it seems that governments will act most grudgingly or simply issue press releases to present the illusion of them taking action on the issues facing the world. You can have a direct impact on Twitter.

8. It is a great way to share links, eco-friendly products and resources. The more information that people have easy access to, the more likely they are to make educated and proper lifestyle choices. There is no longer a reason to say one didn’t know better.

9. If you have a question, there is ALWAYS someone there to help. Usually more than one person – it is a friendly community of people who all share similar ideals and passions.

10. It is addicting! Once you start and figure out how to get the most out of Twitter, you’ll be hooked and will be constantly craving more information, more interaction and more opportunities to help.

While I am a relative newbie in terms of Twitter, I must admit that signing up for a free Twitter account and diving right in, was the best choice that I have ever made in terms of pursuing my passion for the planet. A phobia is a handy way to get myself out of unpleasant situations. I developed Dentophobia (fear of the dentist) when my wisdom teeth decided to come in, but it was cured when the pain became so unbearable that I set out for the dentist office for some relief. Phobias also provide good excuses for why I do some of the silly things I seem to do, such as, when computers were first introduced to our school.

When computers were first introduced to our school I developed instant Cyberphobia (fear of computers or working on them). As the years passed I lost this phobia, but I noticed that there are many phobias associated with computers. In other words if you have any of the following phobias I would not be even near a computer.

Neophobia (fear of anything new)computers change daily, oops, hourly so you need to avoid them. Monophobia (fear of being alone)since working on a computer is not group work you should avoid a computer. At this year’s IDF show, Phoenix has been starting up Windows 7-based computers in 10 to 20 seconds, showing off its Instant Boot BIOS. The product is based on technology from UEFI, a joint effort by personal computer companies to modernize the booting process.

BIOS isn’t the only factor in boot times, but it’s a significant one, typically adding 5 to 10 seconds to any start-up, by Laptop Magazine’s estimate. That’s because the BIOS has to turn on everything, from the CPU to the hard drives, before the operating system can begin to load. Instant Boot BIOS, by comparison, loads in about a second.

When paired with an optimized Windows 7 start-up feature on PCs unencumbered with bloatware, a Lenovo T400s with a solid state drive loaded in 10 seconds, according to Laptop Magazine. Engadget reports that a Dell Adamo loaded in less than 20 seconds. Granted, these computers were running in ideal conditions, but even the difference between 30 seconds and 40 seconds can feel like an eternity sometimes.

Phoenix is offering the Instant Boot BIOS to computer manufacturers, who could either offer it in new computers or add it to existing ones through a firmware upgrade. It’s not clear whether consumers will have to pay extra for the feature — perhaps manufacturers will find the technology more worthwhile as a marketing point.

Sure, this may not be instant-on computing, but it’s a start.
